A funeral in Ga-Mamabolo for Ntate Simon Lekganyane, the father of ANC NEC member Soviet Lekganyane, has become a point of controversy after a social media user accused the party of politicizing the event.
The criticism, posted on X (formerly Twitter), alleged that ANC members had inappropriately used the somber occasion to discuss former President Jacob Zuma. The user claimed his name was being used to stir controversy, even though he has withdrawn from the public spotlight.
Although the criticism was not directly aimed at her, ANC member Nkhensani Kubayi, who was present at the funeral, issued a sharp rebuttal to the allegation. She dismissed the claim with the reply: “Stop what you are smoking.”
The online exchange highlights the challenges public figures face in navigating political discourse, especially during sensitive events. It also underscores how quickly social media can amplify allegations and shape public perception of real-world events.
The incident has prompted broader reflections on the boundaries of political discussion and the significant influence of digital platforms on South Africa’s often fraught political landscape.
