South African Taxi Industry Halts Operations in Protest Action

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has announced an immediate halt to operations in parts of the country, causing significant disruption to commuters who rely on taxis as their primary transport.

The decision was declared by a SANTACO leader in a video message circulating on social media, in which he stated that no taxis would operate until the industry’s demands are addressed. While the specific grievances weren’t fully detailed in the clip, industry sources indicate the protest centers around longstanding issues including rising fuel costs, alleged harassment by law enforcement, excessive traffic fines, and regulatory challenges regarding permits.

The shutdown has already stranded countless commuters across townships and urban areas, with unusually quiet taxi ranks forcing passengers to seek alternative transportation. The action has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some expressing sympathy for taxi operators facing increased operational costs, while others criticize the protest for disproportionately affecting low-income earners who depend on affordable transit.

This development represents an escalation in tensions between the taxi industry and government authorities. SANTACO had previously warned that continued neglect of their concerns would lead to drastic measures. The government has yet to issue an official response, but pressure is mounting for urgent negotiations to prevent a prolonged transport crisis that could severely impact the economy and daily life.
