A church in Mkhuhlu, Calcutta, Mpumalanga, was the target of a frightening armed robbery during a service on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which took place around 11:45 AM.

According to reports, three armed men entered the church while the service was happening. They ordered the congregation to kneel and then stole their cash, cell phones, and keys. The suspects fired shots inside the building, terrifying everyone present. Fortunately, no one was physically injured.

The robbers fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo that was stolen from one of the worshippers during the crime. Police have confirmed the vehicle was taken and are searching for it.

Investigators collected spent bullet casings from the scene as evidence. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspects are still at large.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. People can contact Lieutenant Colonel Skhumbuzo Ceko at 082 922 9902, call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, or provide tips via the MySAPS app. All information will be treated confidentially, and tipsters can remain anonymous.

The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned the crime. He expressed concern over criminals targeting places of worship, which should be safe havens. Police have promised to increase efforts to find the culprits and improve safety in the area.

The robbery has caused outrage in the community, with residents and religious leaders calling for improved security at churches. The event has also raised wider concerns about public safety and violent crime in the region.
