ANC Youth League Urges Home Affairs Minister to Act on Illegal Immigration and Corruption

ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Malatji has called on Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber to urgently address illegal immigration and corruption within the department, warning that the issues are placing unsustainable pressure on South Africa’s communities and public services.

Speaking during a media briefing at Luthuli House on Wednesday, Malatji urged Schreiber to “pull up his socks” and strengthen border management systems. He stressed that only documented immigrants should be permitted in the country, adding that illegal immigration was burdening health care, education, and the labour market at a time when young South Africans are struggling to find jobs.

“The department must fix inefficiencies, stop corruption in the issuing of documents, and act firmly against those who undermine immigration laws,” Malatji said.

The Youth League also launched its discussion documents ahead of its 2nd National General Council, covering topics such as the economy, education, social transformation, and youth development.

Malatji dismissed suggestions that Schreiber, who was appointed Home Affairs Minister in July as part of the Government of National Unity, should be given more time. “When there’s a new minister, he takes responsibility for everything – the good and the bad,” he said.

The ANCYL leader also linked the issue to the recent burning of the Germiston Home Affairs office, warning that corruption may worsen without proper systems in place. He further raised concerns about undocumented immigrants contributing to collapsing infrastructure in health and education, and called for greater investment in schools and public services.
