Bail for Accused Killer in Vaal Engineer Murder Sparks Outrage

The murder case of Vaal engineer Thabo Radebe has taken a controversial turn after the accused, Katiso Molefe, was granted bail, angering the community and the victim’s family.

Molefe, 34, faces charges of murder, robbery, and illegal firearm possession in connection with Radebe’s death. The mechanical engineer was found shot in his car near a Sharpeville construction site in May, with his laptop, work documents, and personal items missing.

During a heated bail hearing at the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court, Molefe’s lawyer argued he had no prior record, strong community ties, and was not a flight risk. The defence also questioned the strength of the state’s case, calling it circumstantial.

Prosecutors strongly opposed bail, warning that releasing Molefe could endanger witnesses and weaken public trust in justice. Despite their objections, Magistrate Thembeka Mthethwa granted bail at R15,000, with conditions including twice-weekly police check-ins and surrendering his passport.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism. Local activist Bongani Ndlovu said, “A man accused of taking a life should not be free before trial, especially in a country fighting violent crime.”

The trial is expected later this year, with prosecutors relying on forensic evidence and witness testimony. Police say investigations continue and more arrests are possible.

Meanwhile, Radebe’s family and the community demand justice, mourning the loss of a man they describe as one of Sharpeville’s brightest minds.
