ActionSA’s Johannesburg Leader Nobuhle Mthembu Resigns, Cites Lack of Transparency

Nobuhle Mthembu, the Johannesburg leader of ActionSA, has resigned from the party with immediate effect, blaming internal conflicts, a lack of transparency, and weak internal democracy.

Her exit comes after she was ousted as council Speaker through an ANC-backed no-confidence motion. The move followed ActionSA’s refusal to support a separate motion against Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.

Mthembu, who became regional leader and Speaker last year with ANC coalition support, said the party’s decisions no longer reflected her values or the needs of her constituents.

“The party’s internal workings and decision-making no longer align with my principles or the interests of the people I serve,” she said. “Organizations must encourage open debate, transparency, and democracy. Despite raising these concerns, no real change happened.”

She added, “I believe stepping down is best for me and my constituency. My time with ActionSA has come to an end.”

Mthembu’s resignation raises questions about stability within ActionSA’s Johannesburg structures and its relationship with coalition partners. The party has yet to comment on her departure.
