Alleged diamond smuggler and fraud accused Louis Liebenberg has made startling claims in court, testifying that he paid R10 million to advocate Dali Mpofu—allegedly for former President Jacob Zuma’s legal fees—and gave expensive diamonds to the wife of Deputy President Paul Mashatile.
Liebenberg, on trial for fraud, money laundering, and financial violations related to a R4 billion diamond scheme, told the Johannesburg High Court that the payment to Mpofu was meant to help Zuma with his legal battles. He also claimed he handed diamonds to Mashatile’s wife in private meetings, supposedly seeking political protection as his business faced scrutiny.
Mpofu, a well-known lawyer, has not confirmed or denied the allegations. The Deputy President’s office has not officially responded, but sources close to Mashatile dismissed the claims as “false and outrageous.”

The trial has drawn attention for its mix of high-stakes finance, politics, and alleged corruption. Prosecutors say Liebenberg lured investors with promises of huge returns from diamond deals but instead spent their money on luxury cars, helicopters, and gifts to powerful figures.
As more witnesses prepare to testify, the case could extend for weeks. Legal experts say if Liebenberg’s claims are proven, the trial could have major political consequences.
