Former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo Faces Scrutiny Over 24 Properties

Former North West Premier and ANC leader Supra Mahumapelo is under public scrutiny after reports revealed he owns at least 24 properties across South Africa. The properties include 18 homes, two business premises, and six undeveloped land parcels.

The findings have raised questions about how political leaders accumulate wealth, especially those who have held high government positions. Mahumapelo, who was premier from 2014 to 2018, has been a controversial figure, with past allegations of mismanagement and involvement in ANC internal conflicts.

Reports indicate his properties are spread across multiple provinces, including Gauteng, North West, and the Free State. The business properties are in key commercial areas, while the vacant land is reportedly reserved for future development.

Mahumapelo has not publicly addressed the extent of his property holdings. However, critics and opposition parties are demanding transparency, questioning whether the assets were obtained legitimately or through political influence.

There are growing calls for Parliament’s Ethics Committee and the Public Protector to investigate the source of his wealth and possible conflicts of interest during his time in office.

Civil society groups argue this case highlights a wider trend of political leaders amassing wealth while many communities struggle with poverty, unemployment, and poor service delivery.

Mahumapelo remains active in the ANC and Parliament. His career has seen both highs and controversies, including stepping down as premier in 2018 amid protests and corruption allegations.

The ANC has not yet commented on the property reports. However, the issue is likely to increase pressure for accountability in government.

Investigative journalists and watchdog groups are continuing to examine Mahumapelo’s property dealings, with more details expected soon.
