“Why Silence Him?” – Mkhwanazi Targeted for Speaking Out, Says Modidima Mannya

Prominent legal expert Modidima Mannya has condemned the attacks on former Acting Public Protector Kholeka Mkhwanazi, calling the backlash “dangerous and cowardly.” His strong defense comes after Mkhwanazi made explosive claims about President Cyril Ramaphosa and alleged political interference in key investigations.

“The attempts to discredit the messenger instead of addressing the message threaten our democracy,” Mannya warned in a scathing opinion piece. He argued the controversy goes beyond Mkhwanazi personally, touching on the independence of South Africa’s oversight institutions and constitutional integrity.

Mkhwanazi recently alleged that powerful forces were manipulating state bodies meant to ensure accountability. His claims triggered fierce criticism from political quarters, with some accusing him of bias. But Mannya suggests the aggressive response speaks volumes.

“If his allegations are false, they should be disproven with facts – not character assassination,” Mannya stated. “The hysterical reaction suggests he’s exposed uncomfortable truths.”

The legal heavyweight warned that suppressing whistleblowers undermines public trust in democracy. “Who benefits from silencing him? What are they trying to hide?” Mannya questioned pointedly.

As tensions escalate around government accountability, Mannya’s intervention adds new urgency to the debate. With state institutions under scrutiny, South Africans face a critical choice: confront difficult truths or continue punishing those brave enough to reveal them.
