Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has tempered expectations ahead of the new DStv Premiership season, warning supporters not to assume last term’s Nedbank Cup triumph automatically makes them title favorites.
The Tunisian tactician, speaking after a pre-season session, acknowledged the significance of defeating both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns en route to cup glory, but stressed the league demands different qualities.
“That cup run showed our potential, but the league is a 30-game test of consistency,” Nabi said. “We’re building something sustainable here, not chasing quick fixes.”
The Glamour Boys’ eight-year league drought remains a painful reality for their passionate fanbase, despite May’s cup success that hinted at a revival. Nabi’s structured approach – blending youth with experience while implementing disciplined tactics – has brought renewed optimism to Naturena.
While confirming targeted reinforcements are being sought, the coach emphasized: “We won’t sign players just to please people. Every addition must fit our philosophy perfectly.”
With Sundowns and Pirates also strengthening, Nabi urged patience: “Winning cups is wonderful, but establishing a winning culture takes time. Our supporters’ belief will be crucial this season.”
As pre-season preparations intensify, Chiefs faithful face a familiar dilemma – balancing hope from their cup heroics against the sobering reality of their lengthy league title absence. Nabi’s challenge is converting that cup momentum into sustained Premiership contention.
