A high-profile police raid in Sandton has sparked political controversy after officers arrested Katiso “KT” Molefe – the alleged mastermind behind the 2022 murder of amapiano star DJ Sumbody – while Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene was present at the suspect’s home.
The Monday arrest took an unexpected turn when Kunene, Johannesburg’s Transport MMC, was found attending what he described as a scheduled business meeting with Molefe. While Kunene was released after questioning, the incident has cast scrutiny on the PA’s leadership, particularly its president Gayton McKenzie, who recently became Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.
The timing proves sensitive as it follows explosive claims by police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about political interference in criminal cases. Molefe, already facing charges for the Vereeniging murder of engineer Armand Swart, now stands accused of orchestrating DJ Sumbody’s killing – a case that shocked the nation when the musician was gunned down in Johannesburg.
Political analysts note the incident tests the PA’s carefully crafted narrative of rehabilitation. The party, founded by McKenzie and Kunene – both with past criminal records – has built its brand on leaders who turned from crime to politics. However, Kunene’s association with an alleged murder mastermind threatens this image.
“The public deserves clarity on why a senior politician was meeting with a man accused of multiple murders,” said political analyst Thandi Ndlovu. “At minimum, it shows poor judgement during a sensitive election period.”
McKenzie has yet to address the matter publicly, though pressure mounts for transparency. The PA, which gained traction campaigning against corruption, now faces questions about its own connections. With local elections approaching, opposition parties have seized on the incident, with DA spokesperson Solly Malatsi calling for “full disclosure about this troubling association.”
As the National Prosecuting Authority prepares its case against Molefe, investigators confirm they’re examining all potential links in the DJ Sumbody murder. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized: “No one is above scrutiny in this investigation.”
The unfolding scandal highlights South Africa’s persistent challenges with political-criminal networks – an issue the Moerane Commission previously warned could destabilize democracy. For the PA leadership, the coming days may determine whether this becomes a temporary embarrassment or an existential threat to their political project.
