Malema Returns to Seshego Roots in High-Stakes EFF By-Election Campaign

EFF leader Julius Malema has made a passionate return to his political hometown of Seshego, campaigning vigorously for party candidate Mongatane Ramaphoko ahead of next week’s crucial Ward 13 by-election. The contest holds deep symbolic value as it unfolds in the community that shaped Malema’s early activism.

“This is home – we must lead by example here,” Malema told cheering supporters during campaign stops, with the township awash in the EFF’s signature red. “A victory here shows South Africa the EFF truly represents the people.”

The firebrand leader has taken a hands-on approach, conducting door-to-door visits and community meetings. His campaign message focuses on economic justice, land reform and improved services – key EFF rallying points.

Candidate Ramaphoko, a longtime party organizer, has promised to tackle pressing local issues including water shortages, infrastructure repairs and youth unemployment if elected. “Our community has been neglected too long,” he said during a walkabout.

Political observers see this as more than just a local race. Seshego’s significance as Malema’s birthplace gives the by-election national implications, potentially boosting EFF momentum ahead of 2026 local government polls. The party has been gaining ground in Limpopo and other rural areas traditionally dominated by the ANC.

“The EFF winning here would energize their base and demonstrate growing strength,” noted political analyst Thembi Khumalo.

The ANC and DA are also campaigning hard in Ward 13, making this one of Limpopo’s most closely watched by-elections. But Malema’s personal involvement has given the EFF campaign added visibility and grassroots appeal.

As voting day nears, Seshego residents face a choice between established political loyalties and the promise of change. The outcome could signal shifting allegiances in South Africa’s evolving political landscape, particularly in communities re-evaluating traditional voting patterns.

With the campaign in its final days, all eyes are on whether the EFF can transform this symbolic homecoming into electoral victory – a result that would resonate far beyond Ward 13’s borders.
