Thabang Masemola, an ANC councillor for Ward 10 in Mamelodi, was fatally shot today, sparking renewed concerns over political killings in Gauteng. The Democratic Alliance (DA) confirmed his death in a statement condemning the murder and demanding swift police action.

Masemola, described as a dedicated community leader, had reportedly faced recent threats linked to ANC internal disputes and service delivery tensions. The DA urged authorities to “act decisively” in apprehending the killers, while acknowledging public skepticism toward the South African Police Service’s ability to address such crimes.

This killing follows a pattern of political violence in Tshwane, including the 2021 assassination of ANC member Tshepo Motaung in Mabopane. That case, which saw over 20 gunshot wounds, prompted community protests and led to the formation of a special police task force.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has previously linked such killings to tender disputes and ANC factional battles. The DA’s call for justice reflects growing frustration over perceived police inaction and corruption undermining public trust.

Masemola’s murder has intensified fears among local leaders in Mamelodi, where political violence has surged around ANC candidate selections and development projects. Security analysts warn that without visible police intervention, the violence could further destabilize local governance in Gauteng.

Authorities face mounting pressure to investigate promptly as community anger grows over what many see as a cycle of political killings met with inadequate responses. The case highlights persistent challenges in curbing politically motivated crime ahead of crucial local government processes.
