KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has revealed explosive WhatsApp messages suggesting a connection between an alleged crime syndicate member, an associate of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, and the minister himself. The revelations came during a media briefing in Durban, raising serious concerns about potential corruption and political interference in police operations.

Mkhwanazi presented evidence linking Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who faces attempted murder charges and held a R360 million police contract, to Brown Mogotsi, a known associate of Minister Mchunu. The WhatsApp exchanges allegedly show discussions about disbanding the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team after it raided Matlala’s home.

“Evidence shows Matlala financially supported Minister Mchunu and Mogotsi’s political activities,” Mkhwanazi stated, detailing payments for travel and events. “We have proof of these transactions and will share them.”

Despite pressure to shut down the task team, Mkhwanazi said National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola ordered its work to continue. “I report only to the National Commissioner and provincial authorities,” he emphasized, underscoring his commitment to proper channels.

The commissioner confirmed the evidence is now with the National Prosecuting Authority for possible charges of obstructing justice. Meanwhile, Mchunu’s office acknowledged the allegations but offered no immediate response.

The case has sparked alarm about criminal influence in policing and political circles, threatening public trust in law enforcement. As investigations continue, all eyes remain on how authorities will address these serious claims.
