Monnapule Saleng Set for AS Monaco Move as Transfer Rumours Swirl

Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng appears to be on the verge of a major career move, with reports suggesting he has signed a two-year deal with French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. Sources claim the transfer was finalised on June 25th, 2025, marking a significant step for the South African international into one of Europe’s top leagues.

Saleng, known for his technical skill and blistering pace, is expected to travel to Paris this Saturday, June 29th, to undergo medical tests before the deal is officially announced by both clubs. The move comes amid speculation that the Pirates are willing to let the 26-year-old leave, given their depth in attacking options.

However, the potential transfer has sparked debate among fans. Some believe the Buccaneers are reluctant to release Saleng, while others argue the club should respect his ambitions if he is no longer central to their plans. The situation has drawn comparisons to other high-profile South African players whose careers stalled after falling out of favour with their clubs.

Critics have pointed to Saleng’s fluctuating form after his breakout season, suggesting complacency may have affected his performance. Similar concerns were raised about Itumeleng Khune at Kaizer Chiefs, where a perceived decline in commitment led to reduced playing time.

For now, all eyes remain on Saleng’s next move. If confirmed, his transfer to Monaco would make him one of the few South African players currently competing in Europe’s elite leagues. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates face questions about their handling of star players, with fans divided on whether the club should facilitate exits or enforce contract terms.

As the saga unfolds, one thing is clear: Saleng’s potential departure represents a pivotal moment—both for his career and for South African football’s relationship with European clubs.
