DA MP and Spiritual Healer Karabo Khakhau Clarifies Sitting on Floor During Caucus Meeting

DA member of parliament Karabo Khakhau, who is also a spiritual healer, recently faced questions from the party’s chief whip, George Michalakis, after she sat on the floor during a caucus meeting. Reports suggested she was reprimanded for her actions, which she attributed to her ancestral calling.

According to sources, Khakhau removed her shoes and sat on the floor during a meeting on May 22. Michalakis later spoke to her privately about her conduct. Some within the party viewed the discussion as disciplinary, with one member claiming Michalakis told Khakhau that “work is more important than her ancestors.”

However, Michalakis denied these claims, stating he fully supports Khakhau. He explained that the meeting was meant to understand her needs and offer assistance. “Karabo is a highly appreciated member of the caucus,” he said. “The party has accommodated her requests for time off to perform rituals when needed.”

Some DA members admitted feeling uncertain about Khakhau’s spiritual practices, particularly those unfamiliar with African traditions. One MP noted that while there was no outright discord, some colleagues were confused and sought clarification.

Khakhau, in her response, said she only sat on the floor once due to discomfort with her chair and socks. She denied being in a trance and expressed surprise at her colleagues’ discomfort, as no one had directly approached her with concerns.

She explained that her spiritual journey, which she began in 2023, is now an integral part of her life. “My ancestors are strict, and I embrace my calling as a healer,” she said. Khakhau also dismissed the idea that the DA should educate members about African spirituality, suggesting individuals should seek their own understanding.

DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille confirmed Khakhau remains unfazed by the incident, emphasizing that the party respects her spiritual beliefs. “She is a valued member of the caucus, and her freedom of religion is fully respected,” Zille said.

Khakhau continues to balance her parliamentary duties with her spiritual practices, unapologetically honoring her ancestral calling.
