Gauteng police detained more than 1,090 suspects over the weekend in a province-wide crime blitz under Operation Shanela, targeting serious offenses, gender-based violence, illegal alcohol sales, and undocumented immigration.

Among those arrested, 142 face charges related to crimes against women, children, and vulnerable groups. The ongoing operation, conducted weekly across the province, aims to bolster police visibility, curb criminal activity, and reinforce state authority.

Tracing Wanted Suspects

The operation began Friday night with a targeted search for fugitives, leading to the arrest of 732 individuals linked to violent crimes—including murder, rape, armed robbery, sexual assault, and carjackings.

“This was a coordinated effort between SAPS, metro police, traffic and home affairs officials, private security firms, and community patrols,” said SAPS Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

Roadblocks and Compliance Checks

Authorities also set up roadblocks to intercept illegal goods, stolen vehicles, and intoxicated drivers. The checks yielded drugs, a suspected stolen car, and ammunition. Over 130 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, while 140 undocumented migrants were detained.

Police further shuttered non-compliant liquor outlets and issued fines for violations of the Liquor Act.

Leadership Applauds Collaboration

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Tommy Mthombeni praised the multi-agency effort, stressing its role in enhancing public safety.

Suspects are set to appear in various magistrates’ courts, with some already released after paying fines. Police urge residents to report crimes via the Crime Stop Line (08600 10111) or the anonymous MySAPSApp.

Operation Shanela continues to underscore Gauteng’s intensified crackdown on lawlessness.
