ANC Defends Ramaphosa’s US Visit as Crucial Diplomatic Mission

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has strongly rejected criticism of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s current trip to the United States, insisting it is a strategic diplomatic mission rather than a leisure trip. Speaking at Luthuli House, Mbalula dismissed claims from opposition parties and social media users that the President was “absent” during a time of domestic challenges, calling such remarks misleading and politically motivated.

“President Ramaphosa is not on holiday—he is in the US to fight for South Africa’s interests,” Mbalula stated. “This visit is about securing investment, strengthening diplomatic ties, and protecting our trade benefits, particularly as global economic pressures grow.”

The trip comes amid speculation over the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and ongoing debates about South Africa’s foreign policy positions. Mbalula confirmed that Ramaphosa will meet with US officials, business leaders, and international partners to reinforce South Africa’s commitment to economic cooperation and balanced diplomacy.

Mbalula emphasized the high stakes of the visit, noting that key industries—including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing—depend on stable trade relations. “Jobs are on the line,” he said. “The President is working to ensure South Africa is not economically isolated due to misrepresentation or geopolitical tensions.”

He framed Ramaphosa’s engagements as part of a broader strategy to position South Africa as a credible global player in an increasingly divided world. “Some critics want the President to stay behind a desk while the world moves forward. Real leadership means engaging internationally to protect our nation’s future,” Mbalula added.

While the Presidency has not released a detailed itinerary, sources indicate discussions will cover climate finance, digital economy partnerships, and regional security cooperation.

Mbalula called for national unity, urging South Africans to support Ramaphosa’s efforts abroad. “When the President represents our country globally, he carries all our hopes with him. We should stand with him, not undermine his mission,” he concluded.
