Former president Jacob Zuma has publicly declined an invitation from the African National Congress (ANC) to join both the national and KwaZulu-Natal provincial unity governments, according to a leaked audio recording that has ignited fresh political tensions.
The uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party leader confirmed in the recording that the ANC had formally proposed his party’s inclusion in the Government of National Unity (GNU) and provincial power-sharing arrangement. Zuma rejected the offer, citing irreconcilable differences with the ANC leadership.
“Thabo Mbeki and I were once friends, but we’ve grown apart,” Zuma stated in the audio clip. “I’m speaking frankly about reality – we no longer agree on past commitments because our fundamental disagreements remain unresolved.”
The rebuff marks a significant escalation in Zuma’s ongoing political feud with his former party. The MK Party’s strong showing in the 2024 elections, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal where it eroded the ANC’s majority, has positioned Zuma as a formidable opposition figure.
The leaked recording has energized Zuma’s support base, with one MK Party loyalist declaring on social media: “Zuma is finally making the ANC answer for how they wronged him.”
Political analysts view the move as Zuma consolidating his independent power base rather than seeking reconciliation. By keeping the MK Party outside unity government structures, the former president maintains pressure on the ANC while preserving his party’s distinct identity.
The rejection complicates efforts to stabilize South Africa’s political landscape, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal where coalition governance now appears inevitable. With the MK Party choosing opposition over cooperation, the ANC faces governing challenges in both the province and nationally.
Neither the ANC nor MK Party officials have issued formal statements regarding the leaked recording, but the revelation has already shifted political dynamics ahead of crucial government formation negotiations.
