International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has announced with deep sadness the passing of South Africa’s ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Zolani Mtshotshisa, who died in a South African hospital.

In a tribute issued on Friday, Minister Lamola highlighted Ambassador Mtshotshisa’s pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. “He was instrumental in enhancing our political, diplomatic and economic cooperation, most notably facilitating South African Airways’ reconnection of Johannesburg-Abidjan flights in November 2023,” Lamola stated.

The late diplomat’s distinguished career spanned decades of service, beginning as a Black Consciousness Movement activist alongside Steve Biko before joining the African National Congress. His transition from liberation struggle to diplomatic service embodied South Africa’s journey from apartheid to international engagement.

The Department of International Relations has not disclosed the cause of death, but confirmed Ambassador Mtshotshisa had been receiving medical treatment. Tributes have poured in from diplomatic circles, with Ivorian officials recalling his dedication to fostering people-to-people ties and pan-African cooperation.

Flags at DIRCO headquarters in Pretoria will fly at half-mast as South Africa prepares to honor a diplomat who bridged continents while remaining rooted in the country’s liberation heritage. The government has announced plans for an official memorial service, with details to follow once arrangements are finalized with the Mtshotshisa family.
