Zuma Appoints Third MK Party Treasurer-General in Less Than a Year

In another shake-up within the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, former president Jacob Zuma has appointed Mpiyakhe Fanyana Limba as the party’s new treasurer-general—marking the third person to hold the position in less than a year.

The move comes after the abrupt resignation of Dr. Thanti Mthanti in January, who cited professional commitments just six weeks after his appointment. Mthanti had replaced Menzi Magubane, who himself was appointed after Danisa Zulu was abruptly removed in July 2023—the same day then-secretary-general Arthur Zwane resigned.

A Revolving Door of Leadership

The MK Party has struggled with instability in its financial leadership, raising questions about internal governance. Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela framed Limba’s appointment as necessary to ensure “sound financial management and accountability.”

Zuma reportedly expressed “faith and confidence” in Limba, urging members to support him as he “picks up the spear” in service of the party’s liberation goals.

A Pattern of Sudden Exits

The treasurer-general position has been a revolving door:

  • Danisa Zulu was removed without explanation in July 2023.
  • Menzi Magubane took over but was later replaced by Mthanti—who resigned weeks later.
  • Now, Limba steps in amid ongoing turbulence.

The frequent changes coincide with broader leadership instability, including Zwane’s sudden resignation last year, where Zuma instructed him to “step aside” for a “new role” that never materialized.

What’s Behind the Instability?

Analysts speculate whether the rapid turnover points to financial disputes, internal power struggles, or mismanagement—especially as the party prepares for upcoming elections.

With Zuma’s legal battles and the MK Party’s controversial stance on key issues, the latest appointment does little to dispel concerns about organizational cohesion.
