Eskom Warns of Imminent Load Shedding as Power Grid Buckles Under Breakdowns

South Africa faces a heightened risk of rolling blackouts after Eskom announced multiple generation unit failures, pushing the power system to its limits.

The struggling utility reported that six units collapsed within just 12 hours, forcing it to drain emergency reserves to keep the grid stable. “The system is under severe strain,” Eskom stated, warning that losing an additional 800MW would trigger **Stage 2 load shedding** with little notice.

The latest crisis highlights Eskom’s ongoing battle with unreliable infrastructure, despite recent periods of suspended blackouts. Breakdowns continue to outpace repairs, leaving the grid vulnerable to sudden failures.

Consumers and businesses are urged to prepare for potential outages, as analysts warn that even minor further disruptions could plunge parts of the country into darkness. Eskom says teams are working to restore units, but the situation remains volatile.

With winter approaching, concerns grow that aging power plants may struggle under increased demand, risking prolonged electricity cuts. The utility has appealed for reduced usage to help stabilize the grid.
