A devastating collision between a stranded bus and a fuel tanker on the N1 near Pienaarsrivier, Limpopo, claimed four lives and left nine others injured on Monday.

The bus, which had reportedly run out of fuel, was parked between the roadside barrier and the yellow line with its trailer still attached. While some passengers were allegedly relieving themselves near the barrier, a fuel tanker slammed into the rear of the stationary bus.

The impact caused the tanker to burst into flames, with fire rapidly spreading to the bus. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the intense blaze worsened the tragedy.

Limpopo’s Department of Transport and Community Safety expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a full recovery,” said spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene.

Authorities have pledged a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. “We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly during high-traffic periods,” Chuene added.

The N1 was temporarily closed as cleanup and investigations continued. Police are appealing to witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist the probe.
