ANC Undergoes Major Reshuffle: Mbalula Reorganizes NEC Subcommittees Amid Kodwa’s Resignation

In a significant internal reorganization, African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has reshuffled the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) subcommittees, signaling a strategic shift in the party’s dynamics. This move comes in the wake of Zizi Kodwa’s resignation from Parliament and the promotion of Zuko Godlimpi to a key role within the party’s communication structures.

Zizi Kodwa, the former Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, resigned as a Member of Parliament on July 24, 2024, following corruption allegations. The ANC confirmed receipt of his resignation letter, which took immediate effect. Acting national spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi stated, “The African National Congress has accepted the letter and wishes Comrade Zizi well.”

Kodwa’s resignation came after he was charged with allegedly receiving R1.7 million in bribes during his tenure as Deputy Minister of State Security. While he maintains his innocence, his decision to step down aligns with the ANC’s “step-aside” resolution, which requires members facing serious charges to vacate their positions to protect the party’s integrity.

In response to Kodwa’s departure, Mbalula initiated a reshuffle of the NEC subcommittees, aiming to reinforce the party’s commitment to ethical governance and effective communication. Zuko Godlimpi, who had been serving as the acting national spokesperson, was elevated to lead the Communications Subcommittee. This promotion reflects the ANC’s confidence in Godlimpi’s ability to steer the party’s communication strategy during a critical period.

Godlimpi’s appointment is part of a broader effort by Mbalula to revitalize the ANC’s internal structures and improve public engagement. The reshuffle seeks to address the challenges posed by recent controversies while establishing a more robust and transparent communication framework within the party.

This reorganization marks a pivotal moment for the ANC, highlighting its proactive approach to self-renewal and accountability. By promoting leaders like Godlimpi, who are seen as capable and untainted by scandal, the party aims to restore public trust and demonstrate its commitment to ethical leadership.

As the ANC navigates this transitional phase, the effectiveness of Mbalula’s reshuffle will be closely watched by both party members and the public. The success of these changes will depend on the new leadership’s ability to implement reforms that resonate with the party’s base and address the broader concerns of South African citizens.

In conclusion, the recent reshuffling of the ANC’s subcommittees, spurred by Kodwa’s resignation and Godlimpi’s promotion, underscores a critical juncture in the party’s evolution. Mbalula’s strategic decisions reflect a clear intent to strengthen internal governance and enhance the ANC’s public image, setting the stage for a renewed focus on integrity and effective communication.
