KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has strongly dismissed allegations of a plot to kill, following a deadly shootout between police and members of the notorious Inanda gang. The incident, which took place in Verulam, resulted in the deaths of a 22-year-old gang leader and his accomplice.

The slain gang leader was wanted for murder and linked to at least 10 killings. His criminal history included over 20 cases of attempted murder, robbery, intimidation, and arson. Commissioner Mkhwanazi praised the officers involved for their bravery and determination in tracking down one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most dangerous criminals.

“The ideal situation would have been to arrest the suspect alive,” Mkhwanazi said. “However, he chose to engage in a shootout with police, ultimately determining his own fate.”

Since April, KwaZulu-Natal police have been involved in numerous deadly confrontations with criminals, resulting in nearly 40 suspects being fatally wounded. Mkhwanazi reiterated that police are focused on protecting the community and dismantling violent gangs.

The police are now searching for an escaped suspect who is believed to be armed and dangerous. Residents in Inanda and surrounding areas, who have lived in fear of the gang’s reign of terror, have welcomed the police’s intensified efforts to restore peace.

As the manhunt continues, Mkhwanazi reassured the public that police are committed to their safety. His denial of the plot-to-kill allegations serves as a reminder that law enforcement’s goal is to protect and serve, not to engage in extrajudicial actions.
