uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member Bonginkosi Khanyile has come to the defense of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president and MK Party leader Jacob Zuma, insisting that she played no role in the July 2021 unrest.

Khanyile made these remarks outside the Durban Magistrate’s Court, where he joined other MK Party members, including Jacob Zuma, to support Zuma-Sambudla. She is facing charges under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA) and incitement to commit violence.

Khanyile, who is also facing charges related to the unrest and is set to stand trial in 2025, dismissed the allegations against Zuma-Sambudla as part of a broader effort to undermine the MK Party.

“During the July unrest, I was a participant, and I am also charged. I know for a fact that Dudu was not involved. She never looted or took part in any looting activities,” Khanyile stated. “She has always been an active member of the party, but not in the unrest. I was there myself. There is no case that will stand in court.”

Zuma-Sambudla’s brother, Duduzane Zuma, also reaffirmed his support for his sister, confirming that she voluntarily handed herself over to authorities at Durban Central police station.

“We acknowledge the work being done by the NPA and law enforcement, but at the same time, people must be treated fairly,” said Duduzane. “We will see how this plays out, but I remain confident. To those upholding justice, continue your work. And to those targeting us unfairly, be mindful that the more you do it, the less credible you become.”

As legal proceedings continue, the case has sparked debate over political persecution claims and the broader implications for the MK Party’s standing in South African politics.
