South African musician Bongekile Simelane, popularly known as Babes Wodumo, is facing mounting legal troubles as she prepares to stand trial on assault charges. The trial is set to take place at the Durban Magistrates Court from January 14 to 16, 2025.

The charges stem from an alleged altercation on February 28, 2024, involving Durban designer Philly Mhlongo of SK Dee Designs. The incident reportedly occurred at Mhlongo’s business premises following a dispute over payment for clothing hired by Babes Wodumo’s dancers.

Philly Mhlongo shared her account of the events, explaining that the disagreement began when Babes’ dancers visited her shop seeking outfits for a performance but were unable to pay upfront. Mhlongo refused to release the clothing without payment.

“The dancers came to the shop on February 28 because they wanted to go to a gig. They didn’t have enough money to purchase the clothes. I insisted that they pay for the hired clothes. I wasn’t willing to give them anything without payment,” Mhlongo stated.

An agreement was reached for the dancers to return the clothes the next day, but they reportedly delayed until March 12. When they finally returned the outfits, Mhlongo alleged they were in poor condition.

According to Mhlongo, Babes Wodumo arrived at the shop with her dancers, father, and bodyguard on March 12. Mhlongo alleged that Babes, appearing intoxicated, assaulted her during the confrontation.

“They were drunk. Babes then assaulted me,” Mhlongo claimed.

The case has faced multiple delays due to Babes Wodumo’s failure to appear in court on two occasions, June 27 and October 8, 2024. She finally appeared on October 14, 2024, when the trial dates were set.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the case’s existence and outlined the charges.

“Police at Durban Central are investigating a case of assault following an incident in which a 33-year-old woman was assaulted by a suspect known to her on Dr. Pixley kaSeme Street on March 12, 2024. The suspect was charged and has made several court appearances in the Durban Magistrates Court,” Netshiunda stated.

As the trial approaches, the legal proceedings against Babes Wodumo have captured public attention. The court’s decision will determine the outcome of the charges against the popular musician, adding another chapter to her often controversial career.
