ANC Reclaims Sekhukhune’s Ward 38 in Decisive By-Election Victory

The African National Congress (ANC) has retaken Ward 38 in Sekhukhune during a by-election, securing a commanding 71% of the vote. This victory marks a significant blow to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which had previously held the ward but managed only 22% in this election. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party garnered 6%, solidifying its emerging presence in the area.

The ANC attributed its success to a high voter turnout and renewed efforts to address critical issues in Sekhukhune, including improving infrastructure and strengthening local networks. Limpopo ANC Chairperson Stan Mathabatha expressed gratitude to Ward 38 voters, emphasizing the party’s commitment to unity and development in the region. “This victory reminds us of our responsibility to deliver on promises of transport, infrastructure, and unity in Sekhukhune,” Mathabatha stated.

For the EFF, the loss signals a setback in its efforts to expand its influence in Limpopo. Party leaders acknowledged the growing competition in the region and pledged to continue advocating for the needs of Sekhukhune residents. “We remain committed to fighting for the rights of the people here,” an EFF spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the MK Party continues to show steady growth, leveraging its association with former President Jacob Zuma to strengthen its appeal. With 6% of the vote, the party is gradually becoming a notable player in local politics. Analysts suggest the MK Party could play a strategic role in future ANC decisions, particularly concerning issues of national defence.

The by-election results highlight a dynamic political landscape in Sekhukhune. While the ANC’s victory reaffirms its dominance in Limpopo, the growing presence of smaller parties like the MK Party signals an increasingly competitive environment. This win provides the ANC with momentum as it prepares for the 2024 general elections, where it seeks to solidify its hold on the province and beyond.
