The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), seized over 40 firearms, including high-caliber rifles and handguns, during a dramatic raid at the Durban home of prominent businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize on Friday. The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into alleged tax evasion and other financial irregularities.

Sources close to the raid described as “sufficient enough to start a mini-war.” Among the confiscated items were military-grade rifles, semi-automatic pistols, and a substantial cache of ammunition.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo confirmed the discovery, revealing that the weapons were stored in a secure room within the property. “Preliminary investigations suggest these firearms may have been unlawfully possessed. We are working to trace their origins and determine any potential links to criminal activities,” Mbambo stated.

Mkhize, popularly known as “MaMkhize,” is a high-profile media personality and entrepreneur, celebrated for her opulent lifestyle. While she has not been formally charged, the seizure has cast a spotlight on her dealings.

Mkhize’s legal team has denied any misconduct, asserting that the firearms were legally acquired and registered. “Our client maintains her innocence and is cooperating fully with the authorities to resolve this matter,” a statement from her attorneys read.

The raid has sparked widespread concern about the potential misuse of such weaponry and its implications for public safety. Community leaders and activists have called for a thorough investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Hawks have indicated that their probe is far from over, with further searches and potential arrests anticipated. The seized firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in any criminal activities.

As the investigation deepens, the case raises critical questions about the intersection of wealth, power, and accountability in South Africa. With Mkhize’s high profile and the scale of the allegations, the outcome of this investigation is likely to draw significant public attention.
