An outspoken elderly woman from a South African township, fondly known as a “kasi gogo,” has gained widespread admiration after a video of her critiquing Eskom went viral. In the clip, the gogo, speaking fluent English, expressed her frustration over the lack of clear communication about the KRN2 prepaid meter update.

She passionately voiced concerns about the challenges faced by senior citizens, stating, “The government and Eskom have failed to properly educate us on this issue. We deserve to be informed clearly.” Her confident and articulate delivery resonated with many South Africans, earning her respect across social media platforms.

“This gogo speaks better than some politicians,” one user commented, while another said, “Her courage and intelligence are inspiring. Eskom should be ashamed of how they’ve handled this.”

The KRN2 prepaid meter update, which requires users to upgrade their meters to avoid disruptions in electricity supply, has caused confusion in many communities. Elderly residents, in particular, have struggled with the technicalities due to insufficient outreach and support from Eskom.

The kasi gogo’s bold stance has not only brought attention to the difficulties faced by senior citizens but also ignited conversations about accountability and the importance of clear communication from authorities. Her video continues to trend, with many hailing her as a symbol of resilience and a voice for marginalized communities.
