Malema’s Alleged Fuel Tender Links Resurface, Dividing Public Opinion

Julius “Juju” Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is once again in the spotlight amid allegations of corruption linked to state contracts, commonly known as tenders. The controversy has drawn significant media attention and social media criticism, particularly regarding claims dating back to November 2009.

In October 2021, investigative outlet amaBhungane reported on a fuel tender involving Malema, which is under investigation by the Hawks, South Africa’s crime-fighting unit. The report detailed a letter submitted to the city manager of Tshwane, which allegedly contained additional information regarding a tender awarded to Malema’s company, with similar contracts reportedly granted to other members of the EFF.

Despite being cleared by the Public Protector, Thulisile Madonsela, in 2010, the issue has resurfaced on social media, sparking renewed public debate. Public opinion remains divided: some dismiss the allegations as baseless and part of a smear campaign against Malema, while others argue that they expose potential corruption within the EFF’s leadership.
