ANC Expels Jacob Zuma, Marking a Historic Break with Former President

The African National Congress (ANC) has formally expelled former President Jacob Zuma after rejecting his appeal against the decision. A member of the party for decades and its former leader, Zuma was ousted due to his involvement in founding the MK Party, a political group with ties to the ANC’s historical armed wing.

Zuma’s expulsion, upheld by the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee, was rooted in allegations that his actions violated the party’s constitution. The ANC explicitly prohibits members from forming or participating in organizations that undermine its unity or principles. The establishment of the MK Party, widely seen as a direct challenge to the ANC’s authority, was deemed a severe breach of these rules.

In a statement, the ANC reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining internal discipline and upholding its constitution. “No individual, regardless of their legacy, is above the rules of the ANC,” the party declared. The decision reflects the party’s efforts to preserve its integrity amidst mounting internal and external challenges.

Zuma’s expulsion concludes a turbulent chapter in his political career within the ANC. Once celebrated as both party president and South Africa’s head of state, his leadership became synonymous with controversies, including allegations of state capture and corruption. His more recent support for the MK Party has further strained relationships within the ANC, exacerbating rifts that have lingered since his presidency.

The MK Party, which Zuma has championed since leaving the ANC’s leadership, has garnered interest among his loyal supporters and other disillusioned members of the ruling party. While it is still in its infancy, the MK Party poses a potential challenge to the ANC’s dominance, especially among Zuma’s power base in KwaZulu-Natal and other regions.

Despite this, the ANC remains steadfast in its position, framing the expulsion as a necessary step toward unity and renewal. The party is grappling with internal divisions as it gears up for the 2024 general elections, striving to reestablish public trust after years of scandal and declining voter confidence.

Zuma’s expulsion not only marks a significant break from his storied history within the ANC but also underscores the shifting dynamics within South Africa’s political landscape. Whether the MK Party can capitalize on Zuma’s influence and grow into a formidable political force remains to be seen, but the ANC’s decision is a clear statement of intent to move forward without its once-iconic leader.
