ANC Faces Crossroads as Internal Divisions and Rising Opposition Threaten Its 2024 Election Prospects

The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s ruling party since the end of apartheid in 1994, is navigating a critical juncture as it prepares for the 2024 general election. Amid internal rifts, declining public trust, and a challenging political landscape, the ANC faces unprecedented pressure to unify, reform, and reaffirm its foundational values.

Once celebrated as a symbol of hope and resilience, the ANC is now contending with factional infighting, corruption scandals, and a diminishing support base. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who assumed leadership in 2018, has introduced reform efforts aimed at restoring public confidence. However, resistance within the party, particularly from factions loyal to former President Jacob Zuma, has complicated his attempts to tackle corruption and enforce accountability.

These tensions were on full display at the recent national conference, where calls for ethical leadership and transparency clashed with pushback from members defending the status quo. Debates over the ANC’s direction, ideology, and future role in South Africa overshadowed calls for unity, revealing rifts that threaten the party’s stability and its ability to govern effectively in an increasingly competitive political climate.

Outside the party, mounting pressure from opposition groups such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) compounds the ANC’s challenges. Both parties have leveraged the ANC’s internal struggles, and recent polls indicate a rise in their support. For the first time in decades, the ANC’s hold on power appears tenuous, as public frustration with issues like unemployment, inequality, and service delivery failures grows.

As it approaches this pivotal election, the ANC faces an urgent need to bridge internal divides, focus on good governance, and address South Africa’s pressing challenges. The 2024 election will likely serve as a referendum on the ANC’s leadership and vision, determining whether the party can still reflect the aspirations of millions or if it will yield to the shifting political landscape.
