The Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, a prominent figure within the African National Congress, has dismissed claims that he is stepping down from his post. Rumours of his resignation began circulating online earlier this week, sparked by ongoing political tensions with the Democratic Alliance which has been vocal in its criticism of his leadership.

The Premier, who has been under increasing pressure from the opposition party over a series of governance issues, hit back at the rumours in a social media post on Thursday. “Try harder! I am not a product of cowards,” he said, making it clear that he intends to stay in his position and continue his work as head of Gauteng’s provincial government.

Sources indicate that the Demlcratic Alliance has raised concerns over various issues, including service delivery failures, alleged financial mismanagement, and the province’s handling of recent infrastructure challenges. The opposition has called for more accountability and transparency, demanding the Premier take responsibility for what they describe as “ongoing leadership failures.”

However, the Premier’s defiance has struck a chord with his supporters, many of whom believe the DA’s efforts are politically motivated. The Premier’s statement also underscores his commitment to remaining in power and pushing back against what he perceives as attempts to destabilise his leadership.

Political analysts have noted that while the Premier faces significant challenges in office, including criticism from both the DA and some internal factions within the ANC, his firm refusal to resign shows a determination to withstand political pressure. His response, calling out his critics as “cowards,” signals that he is prepared to confront both opposition and internal dissent head-on.

As the political landscape in Gauteng continues to shift, all eyes are now on the Premier and the DA’s next move, with further developments expected as the debate over governance in the province intensifies.
