Last week, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) revealed that prominent business figures Patrice Motsepe and Johan van Zyl are key members of a newly formed consortium, Ackerley Sports Group. This consortium is set to manage its planned investment stake in South African rugby.*

The announcement marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to bolster the financial sustainability and global competitiveness of South African rugby. Motsepe, a well-known mining magnate and the first African to chair the Confederation of African Football, and van Zyl, an experienced businessman with a strong track record in corporate governance, bring considerable expertise and resources to the table.

Ackerley Sports Group aims to leverage its investment to enhance the professional landscape of rugby in South Africa, potentially unlocking new revenue streams and expanding the sport’s reach. This initiative aligns with Saru’s broader strategy to innovate and modernize the rugby ecosystem in the country, ensuring that it remains competitive on both national and international stages.

Saru President, Mark Alexander, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “The inclusion of respected business leaders in our consortium signifies a vote of confidence in South African rugby. Their experience and strategic vision will be instrumental as we navigate the evolving sports landscape.”

The consortium’s investment is expected to focus on player development, infrastructure improvements, and global marketing efforts. With rugby’s growing popularity, particularly following the success of the Springboks in recent tournaments, this initiative could provide a vital boost to the sport’s financial health in South Africa.

As the details of the investment plan unfold, stakeholders and fans alike are eager to see how this collaboration will impact the future of rugby in the nation.
