The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has promised to hold Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen accountable following allegations that he attempted to hire unqualified DA colleagues into his office. The EFF’s strong condemnation highlights concerns over potential nepotism and the mismanagement of public funds, which the party argues undermines good governance.

According to a statement issued by the EFF Steenhuisen’s alleged attempt to hire individuals with questionable qualifications for senior roles in his office is not only unethical but potentially illegal. The opposition party has called for a thorough investigation into the matter urging the relevant authorities to ensure that such actions are dealt with swiftly.

“The EFF will not stand by while senior government positions are being handed out based on political loyalty rather than merit,” said EFF spokesperson Vusimuzi Madonsela. “It is clear that this is another attempt to undermine the principles of transparency and accountability that are supposed to guide the allocation of public sector positions.”

Steenhuisen, who has been at the helm of the DA since 2015 is facing growing scrutiny from opposition parties particularly over issues related to political appointments and the allocation of resources within his department. The Agriculture Ministry has already been under the spotlight due to ongoing concerns over the department’s inefficiencies and failure to address key issues in the agricultural sector.

In response to the accusations Steenhuisen’s office has denied any wrongdoing stating that all appointments made within the department were in line with proper procedures. However with the EFF vowing to pursue legal and parliamentary channels the political fallout from this issue is likely to escalate in the coming weeks.

The ongoing controversy highlights broader concerns about the transparency of political appointments and the integrity of public service. Both the DA and the EFF are expected to continue to clash over the matter as investigations unfold.
