A police officer from the Senwabarwana station in Blouberg, Limpopo, has been arrested for allegedly murdering six individuals in order to cash in on insurance policies, claiming more than R10 million. The 43-year-old sergeant, who has not been named, reportedly insured the lives of the victims, many of whom were from underprivileged backgrounds, and collected payouts following their deaths.

The officer is set to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the victims were people known to the officer, and they trusted her due to their disadvantaged circumstances. “She pocketed at least R10 million from insurance claims,” said Mathe.

The arrest followed an in-depth investigation led by Captain Keshi Mabunda, which uncovered a pattern of fraudulent insurance claims tied to the officer. The investigation revealed that the sergeant had been taking out life and funeral insurance policies on behalf of her victims, listing herself as the beneficiary. The alleged killings began in 2019, with many of the victims being disabled or mentally challenged individuals.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as a “disgrace.” “For a police officer, entrusted with the safety and security of communities, to commit such heinous crimes is unthinkable. This officer abused her position and preyed on vulnerable people who trusted her,” Masemola said. He added that this arrest should serve as a strong warning that no one is above the law, and the police will take action against any member involved in criminal activities.

The sergeant’s arrest marks a significant moment for the South African Police Service (SAPS), highlighting the importance of rooting out corruption within its ranks and ensuring justice for those who have been wronged.
