In a dramatic turn of events within the African National Congress (ANC), Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, the ANC Women’s League Treasurer General and current MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, is making bold strides to become the Premier of the Free State. Letsoha-Mathae’s ambitions have ignited a political tussle as she seeks to replace the incumbent Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana.

The contest gained momentum following an extended ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting on Monday. During this pivotal gathering, three candidates emerged as front-runners for the premiership. The names put forward to the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration are the current Premier and provincial chairperson Mxolisi Dukwana, Deputy Provincial Secretary and MEC for Public Works, Diboleleo Mahlatsi-Mance, and the formidable Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae.

Letsoha-Mathae’s campaign is characterized by robust lobbying and a strategic push to garner support within the party ranks. Her tenure as MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport has positioned her as a prominent figure in the Free State’s political landscape, and her current role in the ANC Women’s League underscores her influence and dedication to the party’s mission.

Sources within the ANC suggest that Letsoha-Mathae’s move is not merely a personal ambition but reflects a broader desire for change among certain party factions. Her supporters argue that her leadership could usher in a new era of governance for the Free State, emphasizing effective administration and a renewed focus on community safety and infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, Premier Mxolisi Dukwana remains a strong contender, backed by his experience and established leadership within the province. Diboleleo Mahlatsi-Mance also presents a compelling case, with her background in public works highlighting her expertise in managing critical provincial projects.

As the ANC NEC deliberates on the final decision, the Free State awaits a resolution that will shape its political future. The coming weeks will be crucial as the party navigates this high-stakes leadership contest, with Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae emerging as a significant player in the unfolding drama.
