Deputy Speaker Solomon Lechesa Tsenoli has stepped into the role of Acting National Assembly Speaker following the decision by Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to take “special leave” amidst bribery and corruption allegations amounting to over R2.3 million.

The allegations against Mapisa-Nqakula are linked to her tenure as the minister of defence from 2012 to 2021.

The Hawks, acting on behalf of the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate, conducted a raid on Mapisa-Nqakula’s home in Johannesburg on Tuesday in connection with the corruption probe.

In response to the investigation, the Speaker filed an urgent high court application seeking to prevent her arrest, asserting that there is no case against her.

With Mapisa-Nqakula opting to take special leave from her parliamentary duties, Deputy Speaker Tsenoli has been appointed to serve as the Acting Speaker in her absence.

Despite the Speaker’s temporary departure, Parliament has assured that the work of the National Assembly will continue without disruption.

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo affirmed that the institution remains committed to fulfilling its constitutional obligations and programs during this period.

The decision to have Deputy Speaker Tsenoli step in as Acting Speaker underscores the importance of continuity and stability within the National Assembly.

Tsenoli, a seasoned parliamentarian, brings a wealth of experience to the role and is well-equipped to oversee the proceedings of the NA during this transitional period.

As the allegations against Mapisa-Nqakula unfold and the legal process progresses, the appointment of Deputy Speaker Tsenoli as Acting Speaker ensures that parliamentary business can proceed smoothly.

The NA will continue to carry out its functions and uphold its responsibilities, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability in the face of challenging circumstances.

While the situation surrounding Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula remains unresolved, the appointment of Deputy Speaker Tsenoli as Acting Speaker reflects a proactive approach to maintaining the integrity and operation of the National Assembly during a period of transition and uncertainty.
