An 87-year-old man was sentenced to five years in jail after he shot and injured his 13-year-old grandson in a shocking display of family violence. The incident took place in Marite Trust near Hazyview, with the mother of the teenager receiving a distressing call while at work, informing her of the attack on her son. Upon arrival, she learned that her own father had shot her child in the lower back, an act he justified by claiming the boy was “very disrespectful.”
The grandfather’s explanation for his actions only added to the gravity of the situation. Police responding to the scene immediately apprehended the elderly man, also discovering a cache of live ammunition in the house. As the case unfolded in the Mpumalanga court, the 87-year-old was convicted and subsequently sentenced to five years in prison. Furthermore, the court deemed him unfit to possess a firearm, recognizing the danger his actions posed.
The sentencing of the grandfather drew praise from provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, who commended the collaborative efforts of the investigation team, prosecutors, and judiciary. This verdict sends a strong message to perpetrators of crimes against minors, emphasizing the seriousness with which such offenses are treated. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in safeguarding the well-being of children within their own homes.
