Newly elected South African President Floyd Shivambu declared the nation needed a leader rather than a political party during his first speech as head of state. Speaking in Soweto to a supportive crowd, he stated that such a leader has now arrived.
President Shivambu directly addressed rumors about his political movement, Mayibuye. He denied that it is an offshoot of the MK Party or the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Instead, he described Mayibuye as a movement “born of the people’s will – for the people, by the people,” distancing it from existing factional politics.
Shivambu’s rise to the presidency marks a major shift in the country’s political landscape. His message resonated with many citizens who have grown increasingly dissatisfied with leaders they see as out of touch and self-interested. He is now viewed by supporters as a key figure in the fight against corruption, elitism, and empty promises.
At the event, attendees expressed strong support, with chants stating South Africa “needed not another politician, but a patriot.” The term “Mayibuye,” an isiXhosa word meaning “let it return,” has become a slogan for those demanding economic justice, government accountability, and the restoration of national dignity.
The nation now looks to President Shivambu to fulfill his promise to heal the country after what he described as a long period of misleading leadership. His administration is expected to present a 100-day action plan in the coming weeks. For now, the message from his supporters is clear: the people have spoken.
