In a decisive move to combat illegal immigration, Gauteng Police Commissioner, Mr. Mthombeni, spearheaded Operation Shanela in Soshanguve, north of Tshwane, on Saturday, March 9. The operation resulted in the apprehension of 22 illegal immigrants, sending a clear message to those involved in harboring and hiring individuals without proper documentation.

Commissioner Mthombeni, addressing the media with unwavering determination, issued a stern warning to those engaging in the illegal employment and housing of immigrants. He emphasized that such activities not only jeopardize national security but also contribute to social and economic challenges.

The operation, meticulously planned and executed, showcases the Gauteng Police’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws and maintaining the safety and well-being of the community. Commissioner Mthombeni stressed that illegal immigration undermines the nation’s legal framework and can lead to various criminal activities.

“It is our duty to protect our borders and ensure that our communities are secure. Operation Shanela is just the beginning of our intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration,” Commissioner Mthombeni declared during the press conference.

The arrested individuals are now facing charges related to illegal entry and residence in the country. Commissioner Mthombeni urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any suspicious activities or locations where illegal immigrants may be residing or working.

The Gauteng Police Commissioner also highlighted the collaboration with relevant government departments to address the root causes of illegal immigration. He emphasized the importance of creating awareness about legal channels for immigration and fostering a society that values adherence to the law.

In response to concerns about potential human rights violations, Commissioner Mthombeni assured that the operations would be conducted with utmost professionalism and respect for individual rights. He reiterated the need for a comprehensive approach involving both law enforcement and community engagement to effectively tackle the complex issue of illegal immigration.

As the Gauteng Police intensify their efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, Operation Shanela serves as a pivotal moment in their commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the interests of the nation. The message is clear: harboring and hiring illegal immigrants will not be tolerated, and those involved will face legal consequences.
