While the top three provinces get the spotlight for their hard work in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results, we also show concern for the worst-performing provinces.

PROVINCES THAT PERFORMEED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL

South Africans have praised the Free State (89.03%), KwaZulu-Natal (86.36%) and Gauteng (85.38%) provinces for achieving top results, but also the worst deserve to be encouraged in order to do better.

Speaking at the NSC Results ceremony where top achievers were treated to a congratulatory breakfast in Johannesburg, Minister Angie Motshekga said, “The Grade 12 Class of 2024 is reminded that ‘indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili’ (those who have undertaken the journey before can show the path). The good performance of the Class of 2023 will serve as a lighthouse to future generations. Together we rise while remembering that “ukusebanza ngokuzimisela yikhona okulethe imiphumela emihle yabafundi” (the success of achievers is a result of their own doing)”.

NSC EXAMINATION POOR PERFORMERS

Nevertheless, the Northern Cape took the last position out of the nine provinces after attaining 75.84%, edged by Mpumalanga achieving 76.95% and the Eastern Cape at 81.42%.

Although the Class of 2023 achieved an 82.9% pass rate, an increase of 2.8% compared to 2022 – the performance could’ve been better.

CHEATING DISCOVERED IN THE CLASS OF 2023 COHORT

Quality assurer Umalusi found evidence of copying in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga which saw a number of candidates being penalised or disqualified.

All NSC examination candidates are set to receive their individual marks at midnight.
