In a recent operation conducted by the Mopani Illegal Mining Task Team, a significant breakthrough was made in curbing illegal mining activities. Five undocumented foreign nationals, aged between 19 and 34, were apprehended for their involvement in illegal mining at Selwane Village under the Lulekani policing area.

The task team, responding to reports of illegal mining, swiftly arrived at an old mining shaft in Selwane. Upon arrival, they encountered a group engaged in illegal mining activities. As the police approached, one of the individuals attempted to evade arrest by opening fire and retreating underground. Despite the attempt to escape, authorities managed to arrest the four suspects on-site and continued their search for the one who had fled below the surface. Eventually, the fugitive was apprehended, although the firearm used in the incident remained unaccounted for.

The confiscated items included picks, spades, iron digging bars, shovels, torches, and a bag containing suspected precious minerals. Additionally, the task team discovered abandoned mining equipment, groceries, beverages, and cooking utensils in the vicinity, indicating the presence of other illegal miners in the area.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, praised the relentless efforts of the team, commending their actions that led to the arrests and seizures. These apprehended individuals are set to face charges including illegal mining, attempted murder, and contravention of the Immigration Act when they appear before the Lulekani Magistrate’s Court.

This successful operation represents a significant stride in combating illegal mining activities in the region. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies serve as a testament to their commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding communities against such illicit practices.
