South African football mourns the loss of a true legend as former Orlando Pirates player and coach, Phil “Mr Clean” Setshedi, known to some as Phil “Mr Jones,” has sadly passed away. Setshedi was widely celebrated for his contributions to the sport, and his legacy will be remembered for years to come.

Phil Setshedi’s journey in football was nothing short of remarkable. He earned his nickname “Mr Clean” not just for his defensive skills but also for his unwavering integrity on and off the field. Setshedi’s time with Orlando Pirates left an indelible mark on the club’s history.

As a sturdy defender for Pirates, Setshedi not only thwarted opposition attacks but also made crucial contributions with goals when the team needed them the most. His presence on the pitch was a source of inspiration for many fans.

Setshedi’s most notable contribution to Orlando Pirates came in 1980 when he took on the role of player-coach.

Under his leadership, the Buccaneers embarked on a remarkable 16-match unbeaten streak. This incredible run culminated in the Pirates lifting the Mainstay Cup, defeating Moroka Swallows 3-2 in a thrilling final at a packed Orlando Stadium. His record of 16 unbeaten matches stood for over two decades.

The news of Phil Setshedi’s passing has left the football community in mourning.
