The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has called upon Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, Johannesburg’s MMC for Public Safety, to intervene in a situation involving what is perceived as defiant illegal foreign nationals who have seemingly challenged South African immigration officials and police officers regarding their business territory in Fordsburg.

A video capturing this confrontation has stirred controversy and sparked outrage on social media platforms. Malema, in response to the video, urged Dr. Mtswaku to address the matter, stating, “Attend to this situation; he is talking nonsense.” The video features alleged illegal foreign nationals posing as asylum seekers, asserting their authority over their business area and daring the South African law enforcement officers to intervene, even expressing readiness to face imprisonment. Dr. Mtswaku subsequently visited a cellphone repair store in Fordsburg where Pakistani nationals were captured on the viral video challenging South African law enforcement officials.

The integration of illegal foreign nationals with South African communities instead of placing them in refugee camps, as commonly practiced worldwide, has been a contentious issue. Additionally, there have been concerns about the impact of illegal mining activities and turf wars, perpetrated by foreign nationals known as “zama zamas,” causing hardship to communities living near abandoned mines. Turf wars among foreign spaza shop owners have further contributed to the tensions. Many South Africans feel that they are living under difficult conditions, but are hesitant to voice their concerns, as any criticism is often labeled as “xenophobic” by politicians and the media.
