I am deeply saddened to announce the death of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the esteemed Prince of KwaPhindangene, Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, and the revered Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party..

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi was an exceptional leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the political and cultural landscape of our nation. He guided us through the tumultuous ebbs and flows of our liberation struggle and was instrumental in the transition that ultimately secured our freedom in 1994, ushering in the era of our democratic dispensation.

On the morning of Saturday, 9 September 2023, Prince Buthelezi peacefully passed away, just a fortnight after celebrating his remarkable 95th birthday. This moment marks the end of an era, and our hearts are heavy with grief.

My thoughts, prayers, and those of our government and nation are extended to the Royal Household, who were privileged to share an extended lifetime with uMntwana waKwaPhindangene. We also extend our deepest condolences to the Zulu Nation and the dedicated leadership and membership of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

In the coming days, we will work closely with the Buthelezi family to make announcements regarding arrangements for mourning and honoring the Inkosi of the Buthelezi clan. His indomitable leadership has left an indelible mark on our country’s history, spanning seven decades.

As we grieve this profound loss, we will also take the time to reflect extensively on his extraordinary life and the multifaceted contributions he made to our nation’s development. Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

At this poignant moment, we embrace the Buthelezi clan in their mourning and offer our heartfelt prayers for the peaceful repose of the Prince’s soul.
