Farm workers in Soetdorings, outside Polokwane, made a startling discovery on Wednesday. While ploughing potatoes, they came across six boxes buried underground. Upon closer inspection, they found that the boxes contained 7,560 rounds of R1 rifle ammunition and one rifle grenade.
The farm workers immediately reported the discovery to the police, who arrived at the scene and began investigating. The police Bomb Disposal Unit was called in to defuse the ammunition and grenade, and the scene was cordoned off for safety.
The police believe that the ammunition may have been buried there for some time, and they are eager to find out who is responsible for storing it in such a dangerous location. They are appealing to anyone with information about the origin of the ammunition and the grenade to come forward.
The police are also concerned about the fact that the ammunition was found on a farm that is currently being used to grow crops. They are worried that the ammunition could pose a danger to the farm workers and to anyone else who might come into contact with it.
