Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Kannemeyer has revealed why he believes the club made the right call to keep captain Itumeleng Khune at the club after his contract expires.

Khune was handed his last contract [one-year deal] as a player at Chiefs last week. Once it comes to an end in June 2024, Chiefs confirmed that he will be roped in into the technical team and perform ambassador duties with the club’s marketing department.

The 36-year-old is the Amakhosi’s longest-serving player. The conclusion of the 2023/24 PSL season, will mark his 20-year stay at the club.

DAVID KANNEMEYER ON ITUMELENG KHUNE’S STAY AT KAIZER CHIEFS

According to the former defender, Chiefs made the right call on keeping Khune at the club. He plays a big role at the club on and off the field.

“I know [Itumeleng] Khune when I was still at the club. He plays a big role in the team on and off the field,” Kannemeyer.

“I think it makes sense to keep a figure like him. Apart from helping in the goalkeeping department, I think there is a lot where he can be valuable for Amakhosi.”

“The fans love him, upcoming Chiefs players look up to him for inspiration. He has played so many matches, won trophies, suffered with the team as well.”

ITUMELENG KHUNE’S NUMBERS AT KAIZER CHIEFS

All in all, the former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper has played 340 matches in all competitions for Chiefs. He has conceded 220 goals and managed to keep 127 clean sheets.

To add to his great tenure with the Soweto giants, he has won seven trophies. These are namely; three league titles, three Telkom Knockout cups and one MTN8 title.
