Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), spoke to the attendees of the 9th Western Cape Provincial Conference of the party about the recent Africa Peace Mission that President Cyril Ramaphosa led to Ukraine and Russia.

Mbalula noted that President Ramaphosa conveyed South Africa’s adamant opposition to the ongoing war during his diplomatic travels to both nations, together with other African leaders. These visits took place while President Ramaphosa was in both countries.

The election of a new provincial structure after years of interim leadership drew roughly 700 delegates to the conference that was held in Cape Town. The delegates had assembled to take part in the election of the new provincial structure. Mbalula made the most of the opportunity to restate South Africa’s unequivocal position about the situation in Eastern Europe.

He refuted assertions that South Africa supported any type of invasion and emphasized that the African National Congress (ANC) and South Africa’s government continue to maintain a position of non-alignment.

Mbalula went on to say that he planned to present a detailed explanation of the position taken by the ANC as well as the non-aligned approach taken by the government, while emphasizing the critical necessity to put an end to the war. Mbalula insisted that South Africa had, in fact, taken a posture on the issue, and that the nation continued to be adamantly opposed to the ongoing violence.

This was in response to critiques that suggested South Africa had not taken a final stance on the problem. The purpose of the remarks made by the ANC Secretary General was to reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to peace and its intention to play an active and constructive role in the resolution of international crises.
